ABOUT

This is an exhibition presents the  latest multi-media work:  collage, hand-painted books . . . and things for these three artists.  They mine an extraordinary range of possibilities, from academy-pure drawing to “found” materials such as coffee, house paint and whiskey.  This is very much in the tradition of the mid-century modernists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.  But our Charleston trio are not mere copyists.  When there is quotation, it is explicit, playful and evocative.

WARD SHUMAKER

Ward Shumaker creates “layers of meaning” through multi-media work on paper with laborious lines mastered through years of illustration.  Translating his playful voice in 3d design, he has illustrated numerous children books and has hand-painted many books that have earned national awards from prestigious institutions as the Smithsonian and National Design Museum (NY).

TIM HUSSEY

Tim Hussey’s line work, prescious and incisive, is the fruit of his long career in editorial illustration.  Tim Hussey explores various media through interrelated realms of illustration, figure painting and pure abstraction. His paintings are infused with intense color and texture, allowing the chaotic nature of the media to work to his advantage.

DOUGLAS BOURGEOIS

Douglas Bourgeois’s meticulous paintings also grow out of a rigorous tradition of craftsmanship.  To this he has added a mysterious and singular attention to unlikely details.  Mundane objects become strange.  Unlikely subjects become seductive.

The Christ-like visage represents man’s earth-based liaison unto the spiritual world as he erects a structure to assist humans in their acts [...]
