BIO

Michael West creates photo encaustics the explore landscapes of the Southeast.  Grand oaks and tall pines are examples of trees that are translated into luminous, sepia toned surfaces.  A photo-encaustic is created by first applying the photograph to board then manipulating the surface with mixed media (oil paints, teas, coffee, etc).  After the surface dries, layers of wax seal the image, adding depth and texture.
